Period Living Magazine May 2020

I was lucky enough to be plucked from obscurity (Cambridgeshire specifically but I spend my days redirecting delivery drivers to our actual house so I feel pretty obscure) by Period Living Magazine who persuaded me to allow them to photograph our house last summer.

I was ridiculously excited and gently terrified. What about the hole in the kitchen ceiling? I haven’t washed my linen sofa covers since my father-in- law threw a bottle of red wine over them when the boys team won the Articulate contest at Christmas! I didn’t articulate these particular thoughts (perhaps that’s why the girls team lose every year?) but I did warn them that Instagram is full of beautiful photos of corners but spin round 180 degrees and there is all the daily gumpf (mountains of paperwork but whose is it? Most bills are now paperless and I am a stay at home mum and my husband works out of an office, do we have tiny office laden house elves who come out at night squeaking : “Skip to it elves, more paper, more piles, we don’t have long, she managed to hide the last pile under her bed, we only have one night to replace The Big Toppler (that’s the one that I manage to successfully move to the other side of the room whilst I am taking the photo that then falls over, onto me and the beautifully curated (well: tidy) scene. Add nerf bullets, Barbies, wooden scooters that harbour ankle vendettas, children’s socks, books and Bear Yo Yo packets and this is not a Period Living look!

The team were very kind and explained that they could shoot round our lifestyle choices and somehow managed to create magic out of the mayhem. I have included just a couple of the amazing photos here but please do go to their website or even better, treat yourself to an actual real life copy and witness what magic an extraordinary photographer and a very clever stylist can weave around the destruction caused by fiendish elves.

Oh thank you so much, that is really kind. Best wishes. Rebeccax
What a thrill for you, you have clearly put heart and soul in to your lovely cottage! Personally speaking, as a disinterested housekeeper (the garden is always far more interesting) I’d be keen to see the real life elf styled house too, just so I don’t lose all hope as my house has been left to the local elves for too long.

Oh thank you so much! What a gorgeous comment! You really don’t want to see the ‘elf mess’ – mainly because you can barely see anything at all for their midnight shenanigans!!! I too have very important jobs to do in the garden so the elf mess will have to wait!!! Thank you so much Rxxx
