If you enjoyed The Key in the Lock then do seek out Beth’s first book, The Witchfinder’s Sister for another beautifully crafted novel based on a true story.  Bearing all the hallmarks of Beth’s atmospheric writing, The Witchfinder’s Sister tells the story of Alice Hopkins who returns to life in a small village in Essex alongside her brother, Witchfinder General Matthew.  Home is much changed and Alice finds herself having to come to terms with the man her brother has become. There’s a choice to be made when she realises she is at the heart of his plan.

There’s also brand new The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews – a historical mystery set in the English Civil War with whispers of witchcraft, superstition and delving into the murkiness between good and evil in the unravelling of a tale of a shipwreck years before.

For a real modern classic that’s as close to perfection as it gets when it comes to a period novel steeped in atmosphere and suspense, there’s Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist, set in the Dutch Golden age of the 17th century. Eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman becomes the young bride of renowned local figure and merchant trader Johannes Brandt and quickly falls victim to his sharp-tongued sister, Marin. Johannes’ extraordinary wedding gift to Nella – a cabinet-sized replica of their home to be furnished by a miniaturist with an elusive identity – begins to hold up a mirror to the secrets held within the Brandt household. Is their fate held in the miniaturist’s artful hands or will he be their salvation?

Last but by no means least and for the die-hard gothic fiction fans amongst you, what could be better than immersing yourself in Daphne du Maurier’s wild and unpredictable Cornwall and the secrets hidden in the walls and grounds of Manderlay in Rebecca?
