Are You Sitting Comfortably- “The List of Suspicious Things” by Jennie Godfrey

The List of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey

We love a good book club book when it comes to Are You Sitting Comfortably.  You know, one that really gets everyone chatting.  So, Rebecca and I were delighted when Jennie Godfrey’s The List of Suspicious Things arrived on our doorsteps.  Not only is it a fantastic debut novel but it’s one of the most anticipated books of 2024 AND a BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick with Jennie appearing on Zoe Ball’s show last week.

The List of Suspicious Things is such a tender and moving coming of age story about family, friendship and community. It’s about the power of connection and finding it in the most unlikely of places.  There’s such warmth and heart in Jennie’s writing with Jennie drawing on her own life to create characters who live and breathe for the reader on and off the page.

You’re immediately transported to the 80s in this page turning mystery which explores the gut wrenching and heart stopping ups and downs of adolescence and finding your feet in the complicated world of grown-ups.  I adored the main character, Miv, and how we see the hidden secrets of the adult world through her eyes.  The List of Suspicious Things has at its heart the story of two best friends who turn girl detectives – this is as much a story of navigating those tricky teenage years as it is about their quest to find the identity of the Yorkshire Ripper.

It’s Yorkshire, 1979 – Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South.

Because of the murders.

Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn’t an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv’s mum stopped talking.  If perhaps Miv could solve the case of the disappearing women, they wouldn’t need to leave?

So, Miv and Sharon decide to make a list: a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. People they know. People they don’t.

But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families – and between each other – than they ever thought possible.

What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?
